When you want to download a torrent file, your torrent client connects to different trackers to fetch the list of peers that are also downloading the same files as you and then begins downloading the file.

In terms that are more technical a torrent is a server less file created by the BitTorrent file-sharing protocol, which uses the URLs of multiple torrent trackers for retrieving both the list of peers and the chunks of torrent files for seeding. This file can contain Meta information of digital contents ranging from movies, songs to all sorts of cool stuff that you can download via your torrent client.
